Wooh. What a scenic day.
From Almont we rode through Taylor Canyon Road. The climb upto the reservoir was very scenic.
The climb from west to the Cottonwood Pass was hard-packed dirt road. This road was actually better than the paved road at the start of the canyon that day. But I can't say what I would be under rain.
I wanted to get to the pass by noon, but missed by about 10 minutes. During the final switchbacks, the clouds thickened. It also got very foggy.
The rain started when I was at the pass. I took a couple of pictures, grabbed a banana from the aid station, and jumped back onto the bike. I was cold and miserable as my jacket was not meant for heavy cold rain. To keep my body warm, I tried to pedal and descend as fast as I can. It was risky, but I enjoyed the descent.
I later found that several hundreds of riders were asked to abandon their bikes at the pass and jump into SAG vehicles. They brought the bikes down later that evening.
That night we stayed in Leadville, as PDS (the delivery company organizing our hotels) could not find hotels in Buena Vista. Although some riders rode to Leadville from Buena Vista, we took a shuttle.
